Celebrating Pride Month in Riverside, Illinois
We ❤️๐งก๐๐๐๐ this Instagram post from @emmiehana!
"I hesitated to post this because it seemed almost trivial in supporting our LGBTQIA+ community. This little Instagram post doesn’t provide safety or give any real support. My hope is that it does give someone a sense of reassurance or pride to know there is a village full of people who not only support them, but welcome them as neighbors. That there is a village full of people that think diversity enriches the lives for everyone. Perhaps it will remind someone that it is important to put an effort towards making people feel welcomed. Remind people to consider the fear and concern for safety that some people face when joining a new community. Let’s keep all our neighbors feeling loved, accepted and wanted. We are all better for it." ❤️๐งก๐๐๐
The Village of Riverside Board of Trustees has decided to debate flying the rainbow flag in support of our LGBTQ community. The Board has a history of not supporting our LGBTQ friends when two years ago voted to change Village policy, forcing a beautiful rainbow banner to be removed (and to prevent that banner from being errected again). Now, they've decided to debate again about flying a a rainbow flag that was donated to the Village. Although there are new board members this time around, the fact remains our Village is over-analyzing something that other Villages recognize as a positive support of people living in, working in and visiting their communities (Berwyn has been flying the rainbow flag for years; just this year, North Riverside voted to fly the flag, too). My ask of you is to please email the Riverside Board of Trustees to let them know your thoughts about flying the rainbow flag. They have only received 10 emails to date and need to hear from more people. Here are their email addresses: bsells@riverside.il.us
epeters@riverside.il.us dpollock@riverside.il.us wjisa@riverside.il.us cevans@riverside.il.us agallegos@riverside.il.us ehannon@riverside.il.us For those who have never written public officials before, your message can be simple and right to the point. If you have a personal connection to the subject, add in your story. But, don't feel you have to be especially eloquent or long-winded. The point is making sure Riverside's Board of Trustees hear from as many people as possible. Feel free to forward this request to your friends and neighbors, too. (And if you've already written the Board, thank you. I wanted to cast a wide net with this email and apologize if I sent this to folks who have already made their voices heard!) The Board is set to debate this on Thursday at 7pm. If you're so inclined, please come to Village Hall at 6:45 for a photo and to attend the meeting (you're also more than welcome to say a few words during public comment, if you're so inclined).
